Onam 2022: The History Behind This Major Kerala Festival

Onam is an annual harvest festival in Kerala. It is a ten-day festival that culminates in a public holiday on the tenth day. Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs mainly celebrate this major festival enthusiastically.
People believe Onam to be a celebration of the homecoming of King Mahabali. According to legend, King Mahabali was a just and wise ruler whom the people loved and respected. However, envious of his popularity among the common masses, the gods overthrew King Mahabali and banished him to the underworld. After King Mahabali pleaded with the gods to visit his city at least once in a year, they took pity on him and praised his love for his kingdom. As a result, every year, on the day of Onam, people believe that King Mahabali visits his former kingdom.
The Hindu god Vishnu also has a close association with the festival of Onam. The story goes that Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf in order to defeat King Bali. After defeating Bali, Vishnu granted him a boon and as a result, Bali could return to his kingdom once every year. To this day, the people of Kerala commemorate the event of his return as ‘Onam’.
