Hariyali Teej 2022: History, Significance & Fashion Etiquette

Intro

The monsoons have started and the summer warm air is cooling again. The winters will come up on the horizon soon as the Earth starts to calm down from the blistering summers we’ve had this year. As we transition from the summers to winters, many Hindu festivals will take place during this period. One of them is the Teej festival or the Hariyali Teej 2022 festival. In this blog, we will learn all about Teej and how to dress up for it.

What is ‘Teej’?

Teej is one of the most important Hindu festivals for married women. Unmarried girls can also celebrate this festival with equal fervour and rites. This festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati’s union in marriage during which women dress up in primarily red or orange sarees and colour their hands & feet with Henna.

Women celebrate Teej by dancing, singing, telling stories (vrat katha), making festive foods, and getting together with friends and family.

Where is it mainly celebrated?

Teej is mainly the festival of Northern Indians. Teej is one of the main festivals in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

Types of Teej

There are three types of Teej that we celebrate in a year. Most Teej festivals fall during the monsoon or the Hindu month of ‘Shravan Maas’.

HARIYALI TEEJ

Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the third day after the new moon during Shravan Maas. In Rajasthan, people refer to it as the ‘Choti Teej’. Since the monsoon climate paves the way for new greenery in the surroundings, it is called the ‘Hariyali’ Teej. Also, women dress up in green sarees and salwar suits to mark the advent of greenery brought on by the rains.

Hariyali Teej is mainly observed in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. It is an official holiday in many states where the Government organises cultural events and functions in schools, parks and community halls.

KAJARI TEEJ

This festival is also known as the ‘Boorhi Teej’. In Rajasthan, it is known as ‘Badi Teej’ and is mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva. Women sing folk songs known as ‘kajris’ and pray to the Neem tree for the long lives of their spouses.

During this festival, women go on a ‘nirjala’ fast, meaning they don’t eat or even drink water for the whole day. To break the fast, women eat Sattu before performing some rituals and puja.

HARTALIKA TEEJ

The name ‘Hartalika’ was given to Parvati by Shiva and he proclaimed that she be worshipped under this name during the festival of Teej.

The focus of this Teej festival falls primarily on Goddess Parvati and her marriage to Lord Shiva. Women observe a full-day ‘nirjala’ fast during which they sing, dance and pray to Parvati for good blessings. Married women pray and fast for the long lives of their spouses whereas unmarried observe this festival so that they can get blessings for a good husband.

Now that we know what is Teej festival is, we can move on to the next part i.e. what to wear during Teej.

Being an important Hindu festival for women, Teej is a highly traditional celebration. Usually, women wear sarees in colours of green, red and orange. They wear bangles, and earrings, and apply mehndi or Alta on their hands and feet. Married women dress up a little extra during this day owing to the multitude of bridal accessories available.

However, with times, many women living in cities opt to go for salwar suits for added comfort while moving. But as far as the original celebration goes for Teej, a saree is a must-wear on this day.
