The art of making handloom Pochampally Sarees started in the 1950s in Pochampally, Telangana. At that time, the village head of Pochampally decided to create weaves of cotton along with silk. The traditional Pochampally weaving technique came from Chirala called Chit-Ku. Many weavers then learned weaving techniques and took over the secrets of this art.
Ikat weavers from Chirala established the Telia Rumal process for the Pochampally weavers. The weavers diverse their offerings into more interesting sarees and dress materials. These sarees initially came in only a few selected colours. The colours were red, black and white. With the development of new techniques, different colours came into pre-existing colour schemes. Like pastel shades to produce sarees of high artistic value.

The weave started spreading across 10,000 families of artisans in 100 villages. The town became capable enough to compete with other silk manufacturers across India. With the introduction of machines in the year 2000, the weaving technique became more precise and faster.

The Pochampally Ikat sarees are influenced by the Ikat weaving of Patola from Gujarat. These sarees are made from mulberry silk or cotton and it takes about one week to weave.
Today most of the weaving takes place in Pochampally village. There are more than five thousand looms. It has found a place in the UNESCO tentative list of world heritage sites.
